Healthy Living in Tower Hamlets

News on February 28th, 2010

Nearly 70% of the community in Tower Hamlets leads a sedentary life. This contributes to the high cardiovascular disease rates, as well as the rising diabetes rates. Ethnic groups from Southern parts of Asia, such as Bangladeshis are in risk of early deaths due to such diseases.

UK Healthy Living Project is one of Selfless’s key projects, initiated to raise awareness about these diseases and how to prevent them through a healthy lifestyle, within ethnic communities around UK. Implementation of the project takes place via healthy living events, organised by Medical and dental students. These events consist of medical and dental students:

Providing basic health check ups.

Discussing the results from the check ups with the patients.

Advising patients on diet and nutrition and healthy living.

On Thursday 18th   of Feb a health seminar was held at the Brady and Arts Community Centre, which was hosted by Stepney Community Trust and supported by Selfless. Alongside the activities mentioned above this event also focused on raising awareness about healthy living amongst children. During the event a smoothie maker showed children, who attended the event, how to produce healthy smoothie yet be creative and be entertained at the same time.

The Health seminar was very successful and useful for the Community. Check ups were carried out on more then 50 patients in matter of few hours. Working in affiliation with organisations such as Stepney Community Trust, Selfless hopes to implement more events such as these to help ethnic population around UK in an effort to create a healthier community.
